How Open Protocols Are a Key Part of Regenerative Technology
This article explores an easily overlooked foundation of regenerative technology: the protocols that determine how people, communities, and technologies can connect and coordinate. Kaliya Young argues that open protocols—shared rules that anyone can implement rather than proprietary platforms controlled by a single organization—can enable interoperability, decentralization, community agency, and diverse forms of innovation. The Great Transition significance goes well beyond software architecture. Today’s dominant digital platforms concentrate power by controlling the infrastructures through which people interact; open protocols can instead create shared digital commons upon which many communities and enterprises can build without surrendering autonomy. In Three Horizons terms, they offer an important Horizon 2 pathway toward Horizon 3 technological infrastructure: moving from enclosed platforms and centralized control toward distributed ecosystems capable of adaptation, cooperation, and self-organization. The article provides an important design principle for a planetary culture seeking to put technology in service to life rather than allowing technological systems to determine the conditions under which life and society must operate.
