Sarafu Network
Sarafu Network is helping prototype a radically different kind of economic infrastructure: one in which communities can create and exchange value based on their own productive capacities rather than depending entirely on scarce national currency and global financial systems. Developed by Grassroots Economics, Sarafu provides open-source infrastructure for community asset vouchers and enables different community currencies to exchange with one another. Its deeper significance to the Great Transition is the possibility of making economies more local, relational, resilient, and self-organizing while giving communities greater agency over how value circulates. The underlying technology is intentionally designed around decentralization, privacy, interoperability, local resilience, and freedom from proprietary lock-in. In Three Horizons terms, Sarafu is a powerful Horizon 2 experiment in the economic infrastructure of Horizon 3—testing mechanisms through which communities can move from economies organized around scarcity and extraction toward systems based on reciprocity, mutual provision, and locally rooted abundance. Its work strongly reflects the Planet Project’s commitments to cooperation, interconnectedness, economic justice, resilience, and self-organizing transformation.
