Jason Hickel

Jason Hickel is an economic anthropologist, author, and leading voice for systemic change through ecological economics, global justice, and post-growth alternatives. As a professor at the Institute for Environmental Science & Technology (ICTA-UAB) and Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics, he challenges dominant narratives of economic growth and development that drive inequality, ecological breakdown, and planetary overshoot. Through his books (The Divide, Less is More), research on unequal exchange and degrowth, and public scholarship, Hickel offers powerful critiques of extractive global systems and envisions just, equitable alternatives grounded in ecological limits. While firmly rooted in Horizon 2 thinking — focused on political-economic transformation within a materialist and secular framework — his work resonates with key Planet Project values such as truth-seeking, minimizing harm, environmental stewardship, and systemic equity. He provides a critical bridge between mainstream discourse and more transformational visions of a post-capitalist future.
