Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance (Cuencas Sagradas)
The Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance (Cuencas Sagradas) is a coalition of 30 Indigenous nations and allied groups in Ecuador and Peru working to permanently protect and restore up to 86 million acres of Amazon rainforest—known as the “Sacred Headwaters”—through a rights-based, bioregional approach. Launched in 2017, the Alliance issued the Declaration for the Protection of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters in 2019—calling for legal recognition of Indigenous and Rights of Nature claims and a just transition away from extractive economies. Their Bioregional Plan 2030, crafted through participatory processes, integrates Indigenous cosmologies, ecological stewardship, and rights-based frameworks for post-extractive development. As a finalist for the 2024 Earthshot Prize, the Alliance demonstrates both impact and global recognition.
This Alliance exemplifies Indigenous-led ecological restoration by advocating for sovereign governance, living forest economies, and nature-centric worldviews—strongly resonating with the Planet Project’s values of interconnectedness, justice, and system-level transformation.
